More Than Checkboxes: Practical Ways to Move K-12 Classrooms and Schools From Diversity to Inclusion
What are some common practices currently in place that make school environments exclusive, racist, oppressive, and biased? How do you create an environment where we move past the superficial work of diversity to the uncomfortable and more difficult work of inclusion and dismantling whiteness? Why is addressing and disrupting whiteness important in all schools even those that are majority white in population? What are ways we can better do the work in our schools to create not only welcoming environments for both educators and students of color, but ultimately provide sufficient agency, care, and support that allows these individuals ample opportunity to succeed and thrive? Join this session where we will discuss and share tangible steps and ideas that should occur in all school spaces to dismantle the pervasiveness of whiteness which harms all students and teachers.

Classroom Shift
The whole phenomenon of "school" is fundamentally changing, and we have to shift our classrooms to match. New Paradigms: virtual spaces, authentic (project-based) learning, and information curating. Old Paradigms: teacher-centric, scarcity of knowledge, and "learning" information.
In this session we discuss (come ready to talk!) the changes, and the need for change, that we see in our schools.

The Digital Divide and The Digital Use Divide
This session will focus on how we responded and created a district wide digital equity access plan focussing specifically on how students access broadband beyond the school day. This session will include concrete examples of individual school, district-wide, and community partnerships that were tested to bridge the digital divide in our district and will culminate with how the district gathered a variety of participants across schools and departments to formulate a long term vision and implementation strategy. Although we are currently addressing access outside of school, we also realize that there are significant opportunity gaps in how students across the district are accessing teaching, tools, and rich digital opportunities. This session will also focus on these digital opportunity gaps and strategies to address these gaps.

If We Don't Teach It 'They' Will Be Forcing Perspective One Human At A Time
Humans of all sizes are feeling divided yet closer, more educated, or more ignorant? It seems like a bipolar mess reaping havoc one human at a time. But perhaps it's just humans and the algorithms they make forcing our perspectives.

Join this active learning session if you want to:
  • Look at the global landscape of media, values, and education today instead of just one vantage point that is being manipulated daily by transformational technology advancements and an economy craving human attention.
  • Test your own biases and triggers so you can gain compassion for your staff, community, and students.
  • Practice at least three media literacy strategies that any K-20 educator can use with kids/peers in our classrooms/schools to help combat misinformation/disinformation.

'Forcing Perspective One Human At A Time' looks to inspire educators and administrators alike to weave media literacy strategies into their work; instead of allowing social media, trolls, and clickbait to reap havoc on their student's mindsets, opportunities, and daily choices.

Social Emotional Learning: A Foundation for Student Success
Learning is an inherently social and emotional process. While schools have always focused on academic skills and content, there is a growing body of research and observational evidence showing the link between Social & Emotional Learning (SEL), success in school, and happiness in life. During this interactive session we will explore how paying more attention to SEL can benefit students’ confidence, assist in creating a more positive culture and ultimately improve the learning process. Participants will walk away with ideas and strategies that they can use in the classroom and schools immediately.

Is the Squeeze Worth the Juice? Building a Classroom & School Beyond Two Scores
What we know about kids today has changed. With the advancements in learning science, social and emotional learning and misinformation children need a blended/personalized experience that isn’t measured solely by literacy and math test scores.

In this session, Darren will give you the strategies/tools to “squeeze” out a different narrative that can help administrators/educators create the “juice” needed to address the demands of the whole child instead of test scores.

Using Learning Sciences to Reach All Students
Understanding how the brain works and how learning occurs is likely something we didn’t learn in school or at least it's not something we can easily recall from our pre service experience. We all learn differently, so keeping ourselves up to date on learner characteristics, brain based best teaching practices will help teachers customize their classroom experience to better meet the needs of the diverse learners they serve. This session will expand participants' knowledge related to learning sciences and provide actionable strategies to shape the learning experiences they design.

Want to improve your kids’ writing? Let them draw!
The older our students get the less we look at drawing as an instructional strategy. Too often in our classrooms we view drawing as a crutch, or a distraction that we want kids to grow out of so they can focus on the ‘real’ task of writing. Come learn how one 3rd grade teacher is brining drawing back as a way to support her student's writing while keeping them engaged.
